There’s a lot that goes into regulating communication flows
All that voice traffic needs to be carefully managed. As businesses continue to rapidly adopt unified communications (UC) solutions, more needs to be done to deliver high-quality, secure voice services. It all starts with a device that can protect and regulate that flow.
Session Border Controllers (SBCs) are more than capable of meeting these requirements. No matter what form real-time communication takes, SBCs have evolved beyond their original purpose of controlling Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems. They’re a piece of “need-to-have hardware” to keep communications secure.
Gamma’s Techland proposition is one built on a high-value relationship with Ribbon. Having been a partner for over 18 years, Techland is Ribbon’s only UK-based Gold Partner, and stands apart through a market-leading post-sales journey. It’s that ongoing, 24/7 support which gives Gamma’s partner community an edge when it comes to that SBC proposition.
The SBC hype
So, why are SBCs important then?
Cavell estimates that, by 2028, Microsoft will hold a 41% share in the UC market. All of Microsoft’s deployments, whether on-premises or virtual, will require an SBC to manage that communication flow. For any of your customers utilising Direct Routing, SBCs are a necessity, and they’ll need to be obtained.
For any customers in the UCaaS space, or who dabble in contact centres, SBCs are crucial when managing that voice traffic. SBCs serve a wide range of UCaaS options, so you don’t have to change providers to utilise them. Webex, Zoom, it doesn’t matter – they’re all compatible.
The progressing shift from SIP to cloud is another use case for SBCs. Migrating from legacy cloud PBX to cloud-based VoIP require SBCs to effectively route traffic, while guaranteeing call safety and quality. For service providers, those hosted SBCs are crucial when looking to sell their own services.
Then there’s security and all the caveats around that. Fraud prevention and security management are a large component of the SBC proposition. Stringent measures are implemented to keep sensitive voice traffic safe, while being properly managed and properly protected from external interventions.
In addition to all of this, things are going global. From Gamma’s side, Global Communications Enablement means the capabilities around SBCs are being extended internationally. The acquisition of Coolwave established the foundations from global enablement opportunities, and SBCs can now be taken further than ever before.
There’s no doubt about it. The hype around these SBCs are real.
SBCs from Ribbon
In January 2024, Techland, as part of the EnableX Group, fell into the Gamma fold after the acquisition took place. Prior to that expansion, Techland already had an 18-year relationship with IP experts Ribbon, providing them with SBCs. Simultaneously, Gamma also runs a lot of its network through Ribbon’s own SBCs, so it all worked out rather well.
As of September 2025, Ribbon will no longer be selling their SBC 2000 solution. Don’t worry, it’s just end of sale, rather than end of life, so anyone still using them can get support. However, as they’re being taken out of circulation, does that mean there’s a better Ribbon SBC out there?
Funnily enough, there is.
Ribbon’s Edge 8000 Series extends the 2000’s capabilities, offering higher capacity and greater interoperability. These multi-tenant solutions guarantee high quality, secure bandwidth that can accommodate your customer’s growing ambitions. Cost-efficient devices like these are crucial in supporting that migration to the cloud and maintaining peak efficiency.
This family of SBCs present a strong case on their own in terms of being business-critical solutions. For any business that relies on secure, reliable voice communications to operate, Ribbon’s SBCs are most certainly need-to-have. What takes them one step further is that support from Gamma.
The Gamma difference
Through Techland, Gamma is now fully capable of providing SBCs, but with that added expertise through the post-sales journey. The long-standing relationship between Techland and Ribbon, combined with Gamma’s 20 plus years’ experience in communication solutions, takes those SBCs further. Ongoing expertise and proactive support can reduce customer issues and, most importantly, accelerate time to revenue.
By purchasing Ribbon’s SBCs through Gamma, your customers can benefit from:
- Scalable and reliable performance for high-volume voice traffic: SBCs designed to handle multi-site and contact centre deployments. With carrier-class reliability, failover and real-time monitoring, downtime is minimised and customers receive rapid troubleshooting throughout the lifecycle.
- Seamless integration across platforms: Built for certified interoperability with Microsoft Teams, SIP trunking providers and legacy telephony systems, these SBCs provide smooth connectivity and consistent call quality in hybrid environments.
- Enterprise-grade security and compliance: Advanced encryption, access control, and fraud protection safeguards sensitive voice traffic, meets compliance and regulatory standards across both industries and verticals.
The recent launch of Global Communications Enablement means those SBCs can be delivered globally. We have a strong commitment to that global aspect, and approximately 95% of countries are covered by that proposition. Whether physical or virtual SBCs, Gamma has you covered.
For Ribbon’s Edge 8000 Series, we have the ability to attach Nuso’s call recording solution, providing your customers with call recording capabilities. Regardless of what voice service is being used, such as Microsoft Teams or Webex, call recording can be fully utilised.
Our partners can give their customers that high-quality voice service, backed by that confidence in Gamma’s commitment to ongoing, always-on support.
