Following Openreach’s latest announcement regarding the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) switch-off, new arrangements have been confirmed to preserve existing broadband connectivity for customers who remain on legacy services beyond 31 January 2027.
This is a significant change to the previously announced arrangements, providing greater certainty around broadband continuity for customers who have yet to migrate. Openreach has also provided further clarity on migration deadlines and its Emergency Voice Access (EVAc) solution.
What has Openreach confirmed?
- 31 January 2027: The deadline for placing orders to migrate from PSTN to all-IP services, including SOGEA migrations in FTTP-enabled areas.
- 31 March 2027: All migration orders must be completed by this date.
- From April 2027: Openreach expects to begin migrating remaining eligible PSTN lines to its Emergency Voice Access (EVAc) service, exchange by exchange. While migration is not guaranteed, Gamma remains committed to working with partners to identify the most appropriate migration path for their customers.
- Broadband continuity: Existing broadband services associated with PSTN lines can be preserved beyond 31 January 2027, rather than automatically being ceased as part of the switch-off. This provides additional protection for customers with complex legacy solutions who rely on these connections for essential services, helping to maintain connectivity while they plan their migration to all-IP.
- ISDN and multiline services: These services are not covered by the EVAc arrangements. Migration orders must be placed before 31 January 2027 to avoid the risk of services being ceased.
